Searching For a Cure

During my last visit, Rheumy told me about a lupus study that one of his colleagues from Stanford is involved in.  They are trying to find the genes that cause lupus, but because they are located in Oklahoma, they are having trouble getting Asian participants.  Rheumy gave me some information about how I can participate if interested.  While I'm not a scientist or a billionaire, this is one way I can help to find a cure for lupus.

Here is a link for anyone else who might be interested in participating (they are also looking for family members of those with lupus and for those who have no family members with lupus):

  1. http://snapl.stanford.edu/research/ldn.html This is a link to a study of LDN (Low Dose Naltrexone) at Stanford. LDN seems to work not only in alleviating symptoms but actually halting progression of a lot of the AI diseases.

Our son has UCTD and we just got our Rheumy to prescribe it yesterday, so we don't yet have any results to tell you about. Naltrexone is an opiate receptor inhibitor, and is used at 50mg or more to help treat drug addiction. But at 3 -4.5 mg it stimulates the production of endorphins and seems to help regulate the immune system. It hasn't been studied enough for this to be widely endorsed by the medical community, but has a cult following among AI patients. I am just trying to spread the word to as many people as possible.
